Lake George was founded in 1609 by French explorer Samuel de Champlain. The lake was originally named the Horicon, meaning "tail of the lake", by local Native Americans.

How did Lake George get where it is now?
Lake George as we know it today was formed by glaciers receded about 10,000 yrs BP. (BP means before the president). The glacier paused at the southern end of the lake just north of Glens Falls. A similar event occurred at the north end resulting in the basin that we currently see. The melting glacier left some ice behind to help fill the basin with water.
