Introduction:



Lake George was founded in 1609 by French explorer Samuel de Champlain. The lake was originally named the Horicon, meaning "tail of the lake", by local Native Americans.

How did Lake George get where it is now?



Lake George as we know it today was formed by glaciers receded about 10,000 yrs BP. (BP means before the president).The glacier paused at the southern end of the lake just north of Glens Falls. A similar event occurred at the north end resulting in the basin that we currently see. The melting glacier left some ice behind to help fill the basin with water.

The town of Lake George



Lake Georges town was originally named Caldwell by its founder, James Caldwell. Tourists began arriving about 1810. There was lodging at a log tavern owned by James Caldwell and located on land that is now Shepard Park.

What Battles were on Lake George?



The battles that were on Lake George were the French and Indian War. In 1754 the warfare between the French and English in America broke out into another major conflict

A: People from New York State that were rich built many mansions there. Then Fort Henry Hotel was opened which also brought many people there. People also came for the Beauty of Lake George.
